The Internet is the biggest driver of new submarine fiber optic cable systems. As the Internet becomes a greater and greater part of our lives, demand for Internet bandwidth keeps increasing while the need for relaible Internet service becomes a necessity rather than a luxury. This puts pressure on service providers and governments to build and maintain adequate and reliable backbone networks for Internet traffic. These backbones often require submarine cables.
The development of the Internet is now entering a new phase -- the Internet of Things (IoT). Verizon recently released a report on IoT that provides some insight into the IoT phenomenon.
In announcing the report, Mark Bartolomeo, vice president IoT Connected Solutions at Verizon, said, “When you look across the spectrum, IoT covers a multitude of solutions, from wearable devices, to remote monitoring of energy management devices to industrial transportation to improve safety and efficiency. New use cases are created every day; however, the business case for IoT and enterprise adoption often gets overlooked. Within the past year, amid an improving economy, we’ve seen a number of new entrants starting to use IoT as a roadmap to improve their customers’ experiences, accelerate growth and create new business models that are driving societal innovation.”
