“At the mid-way point of 2015, the submarine fiber optic cable market showed continued strength following a very productive year in 2014.”
That is one of the findings of TSC’s June 2015 Radar Screen Report, which provides a review and forecast of the submarine fiber optic and power cable market.
Demand for the first half of 2015, based on route-kilometers of cable of announced supply contracts, progressed at a pace that was only slightly below that of 2014 and well above the average annual demand during the period from 2009 through 2013.
As we had predicted in the January edition of the Radar Screen Report, there was a lull in new contract announcements in the three months of 2015 as the market “took a breath” following a flurry of large-scale system announcements in the second half of 2014.
The market bounced back quickly, however. By the end of June it was still above the average full-year totals for the period from 2009-2013, even though the total route-kilometers of cable contracted was down by about 30% from the year before -- a demonstration of the continued strength of the market.
In addition to new contract awards, all other fundamentals of the market remained strong during the period. These include the availability of financing, bandwidth demand, the need for redundancy, new project announcements and upgrades of existing systems.
