New Submarine Cable Systems
Arctic cable announced
Arctic Fibre has announced plans to build a new submarine cable system joining Northern Asia and Japan to the United States, Canada and Northern Europe. The cable will contain four fiber pairs, each capable of transmitting 80 wavelengths and initial speeds of 40 Gbps, with provision to upgrade to 100 Gbps as technologies are proven up.

China’s ZTT announces overseas cable sales
Zhongtian Technology Group (ZTT), a leading Chinese cable manufacturer, has announced that it has exported its submarine optic fiber cables to the United States and Italy. This marks the first time Chinese-made submarine cables have entered the European and American markets.

Main One planning new Nigeria cable
In addition to championing calls for a national broadband policy, Main One has also commenced efforts to land another submarine fiber optic cable in the Niger Delta region to extend access to the hinterlands of Southern Nigeria. Funke Opeke, CEO Main One Cable, said the project is capital intensive but it underscores Main One’s effort to break new grounds.

Cable project to boost Tonga’s international connectivity
The Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank have launched a $34 million project which will allow Tonga to gain high-speed internet access by financing the development of a submarine cable system.

Interoute, Bezeq create Internet superhighway between Europe and Israel
Bezeq International, Israel's leading Internet and international telecoms provider, has selected Interoute Communications Ltd, owner and operator of Europe's largest cloud services platform, to expand its physical network right into the heart of Europe. JONAH -- the 2,300-kilometer submarine cable -- will connect Israel to Europe using Interoute’s pan-European fiber optic network from the Interoute landing station in Bari, Italy.

GBI lands first cable in Iraq
Gulf Bridge International (GBI) has landed in Al Faw, Iraq, the first submarine fiber optic cable providing connectivity to Iraq.
