The Orange Marine cable ship Rene Descartes will install the cable for Chile’s Austral submarine cable system connecting the southernmost parts of the country.

Orange Marine announced in a tweet that the Rene Descartes’ first stop would be in China to load the cable, which is being supplied by Hengtong Cable.

Austral will stretch 2,800 kilometers, connecting Puerto Montt to Punta Williams, with branches to Caleta Tortel and Punta Arenas.  Huawei Marine was announced as the contractor for the project in October 2017.

The project is part of the Chilean government’s plans to improve Internet access the remote south, which is comparatively underserved by existing telecommunications infrastructure.
