Nexans

Nexans is one of the leading suppliers of offshore wind cable, especially through its relationship with Orsted (formerly DONG Energy), the world’s leading developer of offshore wind farms.  In 2014, Nexans and Orsted signed a frame agreement for 1,750 kilometers of array cable for UK offshore wind farms.  The agreement runs until 2020 and can be extended for two years.

In addition to manufacturing cable, Nexans has long operated its own cable ship, the Nexans Skagerrak.  In 2017, due to the growth in offshore wind work, Nexans began construction of a new cable ship specifically designed to handle high-voltage submarine power cable installations, such as wind farms and interconnectors.  The ship will be completed in 2020.

Most significantly in terms of the development of the supply chain, Nexans may become the first to begin production of offshore wind cables in a US-based factory.  In early 2018, Nexans announced that it would convert its Goose Creek, South Carolina, plant from manufacturing terrestrial power cables to submarine cables.  The company confirmed in early 2019 that this conversion was continuing.  No other supplier has made a formal announcement about plans to manufacture submarine power cable in the US.
