Ofgem Approves Shetland Link

Ofgem is minded to approve a proposal by Scottish and Southern Energy Networks (SSEN) to build a 600MW subsea electricity transmission link from Shetland to mainland Scotland.

50Hertz has connected the offshore wind farms Wikinger (operator: Iberdrola) and Arkona (operators: E.ON and Equinor) off the island of Rügen to its transmission grid in time for their commissioning and below the originally calculated budget.

JDR Cables, part of the TFKable Group, has signed a contract with Vattenfall for the Danish Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm. JDR will manufacture more than 170 kilometers of aluminum core inter-array cables and a range of termination accessories.

TenneT has laid the first sea cable to connect the Alpha platform to the transformer substation in Borssele. In the morning of Friday 12 April, VBNK started withdrawing the sea cable on land and early Saturday morning the cable reached the newly built transformer substation.

Energi Coast, North East England’s offshore wind cluster, has declared the region’s supply chain ‘fit and ready’ to support the growth of the industry following the announcement of the Sector Deal for the offshore wind industry.

Offshore wind has become the major driver for demand for submarine power cables.  Global demand for offshore wind cables may be so great in the near future as to stretch the supply chain.  Due to this, SCW will make note of major offshore wind developments around the globe as this industry expands.
